Digital Media Lab: Modul-Chatbot

AI project at the University of Bremen: Chatbot to Organize Student Issues

Students are often confronted with a variety of organizational questions that are crucial for the success of their studies: Which modules do I have to take this semester? What are the requirements for the examinations? How many CPs do I still need to complete my degree? The answers to such questions can often be found in complex documents, and finding and understanding the right information is a major hurdle for many students. The Modul-Chatbot project aims to develop a chatbot, which is trained on the basis of module handbooks, study regulations and study plans for individual degree programs in order to answer such questions reliable.

The project is being developed in close collaboration with students and lecturers, with serving as a pilot for the Public Health course. The project is focusing on human- and user-centered development and evaluation. On the one hand, student assistants check answers for potential errors and hallucinations and prepare corrective training data; this human feedback is used to improve the reliability of the bot. On the other hand, the purpose is to test different behaviors of the bot and save chat histories for future analysis. This includes, for example, variations in the language, such as simplified texts, through to targeted adaptation to the user. For the evaluation of the chatbot, questions are collected, test versions of the bot are tested and is continuously improved. In a final field study functionality and acceptance of the system under real conditions is to be evaluated.
